Stan Laurel statue unveiled

Stan Laurel, half of the enduring film comedy duo Laurel & Hardy, was not born in Bishop Auckland but he was baptised at the local church & went to Bishop Auckland Grammar School. His father Arthur Jefferson was the manager of the Eden Theatre in the town. On Saturday 30th August 2008, Stan’s niece Nancy Wardell unveiled the statue, which stands on the site of the Eden Theatre, known as “Theatre Corner.” The statue, which shows Stan in typical pose, was designed by Tyneside artist & Sculptor Bob Olley. Musical accompaniment by the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings. Video by Chris Foote Wood, on behalf of local radio station Bishop fm (listen on line via www.bishopfm.com). Thank you for sharing this. It is nice to see The Boys finally getting some of the long-needed recognition they deserve. I’m also glad to see that more people are discovering Laurel & Hardy for the first time. Just goes to show you that The Boys are still as popular as ever, even 60+ years later!
